Parodia scopa, commonly known as the Silver Ball Cactus, is a charming, small to medium-sized globular cactus native to Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. It features densely packed, short, silvery-white spines that give it a fuzzy appearance, with occasional golden spines interspersed. This cactus produces stunning yellow or orange, funnel-shaped flowers that bloom at the top of its rounded body during the growing season, adding to its appeal. Its compact size and ornamental appearance make it an excellent choice for succulent arrangements or as a standalone feature.

Parodia scopa is a delightful and easy-to-care-for cactus that adds texture and colour to any succulent collection. Its fuzzy spines and vibrant flowers make it a favourite among beginners and experienced growers alike.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to partial sunlight.

Indoors, place near an east- or west-facing window.

If placed in full sun, gradually acclimate to avoid sunburn.

Water

Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

During the growing season (spring and summer), water every 2-3 weeks.

Reduce watering to once a month or less in fall and winter when the plant is dormant.

Humidity

Thrives in low-humidity environments.

Avoid misting or exposing the plant to excessive moisture.

Temperature

Ideal temperature range: 18-27°C.

Can tolerate brief drops to -4°C but should be protected from prolonged frost.

Soil

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix.

Add sand, perlite, or pumice to enhance drainage further.

Fertilisation

Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

Avoid fertilising during the dormant period.

Repotting

Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.

Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Pruning

Requires no regular pruning.

Remove any dead flowers or damaged parts using sterilised tools.

Pests

Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites.

Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Propagation

Propagate via offsets or seeds.

Carefully remove offsets from the base and allow them to callus for a few days before planting in dry soil.

Sow seeds in sandy soil and keep warm and lightly moist until germination.
