Austrocylindropuntia subulata, commonly known as the Eve's Needle Cactus, is a fast-growing, shrubby or tree-like cactus native to the Andes of South America, particularly Peru. This cactus is characterized by its elongated, cylindrical stems and distinctive, needle-like leaves that are bright green and can remain on the plant for extended periods. It produces tubular, red to pink flowers, though these are rare in cultivation. Over time, the plant can grow to impressive heights of up to 13 feet (4 meters), making it a striking choice for xeriscapes and desert gardens.
Austrocylindropuntia subulata is a resilient and architectural plant that makes a bold statement in any cactus garden or collection. Its unique needle-like leaves and upright growth habit add texture and interest, making it a favourite among succulent enthusiasts.
Light
Requires full sun for optimal growth.
Indoors, place near a bright, sunny window (south-facing preferred).
Gradually acclimate to intense sunlight to prevent scorching if moving outdoors.
Water
Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.
During the growing season (spring and summer), water every 2-3 weeks.
Reduce watering to once a month or less during fall and winter dormancy.
Humidity
Prefers dry, arid conditions with low humidity.
Avoid exposing the plant to excessive moisture or misting.
Temperature
Thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 21-32°C.
Can tolerate brief drops to -4°C but is not frost-hardy.
Protect from prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures.
Soil
Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.
Add sand, pumice, or perlite to improve drainage further.
Fertilisation
Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
Do not fertilise during dormancy in fall and winter.
Repotting
Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Pruning
Prune to control size or remove damaged stems.
Handle with care, as the spines can be sharp. Use sterilized tools, and allow cut areas to callus before watering.
Propagation
Easily propagated through stem cuttings or seeds.
Allow cuttings to dry and callus for several days before planting in dry, well-draining soil.
Keep seeds warm and lightly moist until germination.
